Lake Louise, 2008

Hiker on snow covered trail with mountains and Lake Louise in background

We camped at Lake Louise for three days in late July, 2008. Each day we went hiking in the mountains. The picture shows a hiker in front of us on the Plain of Six Glaciers Trail. This trail begins near the shore of Lake Louise and continues about 13km up into the mountains with spectacular views of snowy peaks. The Chateau Lake Louise is barley visible in the background at the far end of the lake.

Arriving in Lake Louise

  • We rented a car in Calgary, and entered Banff National Park on our drive to Lake Louise.
  • Castle Mountain, one of the scenic turnouts on the Bow Valley Parkway between Banff and Lake Louise.
  • Yvonne in our campsite at the Lake Louise campground.

  • Taking a tea break was a great idea!

Plain of Six Glaciers Trail

  • The trail begins near a quartz cliff wall at the opposite end of the lake from the chateau.
  • This trail is fairly steep with several switchbacks.
  • Snow covers the trail in a few places.

  • Plain of Six Glaciers Teahouse
  • Yvonne took a break at the teahouse while George continued on about 1.6km to the Plain of Six Glaciers lookout.
  • A lookout at the end of the trail has great views of giant rivers of ice.
  • Hikers returning from the lookout descend through a rocky area.
